BREAKING: Glo Users to Be Banned From Calling MTN Users — NCC

MTN, one of the leading telecommunications companies in Nigeria, has announced its intention to disconnect GLO customers due to an interconnect debt that has been accumulating for over 15 years. 

On Monday, the Nigerian Communications Commission made this information public in a notice signed by Reuben Muoka, who serves as the Director of the Public Affairs Department. This decision has sparked a wave of concern and discussions within the telecom industry and among Nigerians.

The Nigerian Communications Commission has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom from MTN Nigeria Communications Plc.

This decision was made after examining the circumstances surrounding Globacom's non-payment of interconnect charges and concluded that there were insufficient justifications for the non-payment. 

As a result, after 10 days from the date of the notice, Globacom subscribers will not be able to make calls to MTN, but they will still be able to receive calls. However, in-bound calls to the Globacom network will still be allowed.

What Is Interconnect Charge

Interconnect fees are the charges that one operator pays to another when a call commences on its network but ends on the other operator's network. These agreements are in place to ensure smooth transitions between networks and to maintain uninterrupted communication for the users. This is also one of the ways that mobile operators use to make money.

For instance, when a user makes a call, they pay their access provider, who then pays termination charges to the network the call was placed on.

According to MTN, GLO has allegedly failed to settle these interconnect debts for over 15 years, resulting in a significant financial burden on MTN. As a result, the NCC has issued a notice of disconnection to GLO, stating that if the outstanding interconnect debts are not settled within 10 days of this notice, GLO customers will be unable to make calls to MTN networks.
