Google to Block All Third-Party Android Call Recording Apps on May 11

Google as of late just updated its Play Store policy which will restrict third-party Apps from giving the ability to record calls on some versions of Android.

Stopping call recording is not the first time Google has tried to stop it. The tech giant has been on the plan to stop call recording on Android for a while now.

Recording call through the microphone was blocked by android maker after the launch of the Android 10 in September 2019

And the plan Google has been pushing now is to kill call recording apps on Android for good. With this, app developer will not be able to use the Accessibility API for call recording on the Play Store.

Though pre-installed dialler apps on phones will still be able to record calls depending on your manufacturer.

The Accessibility API is used by some popular apps on the Play Store like the Truecaller, ACR Phone e.t.c Which offers call recording functions.

As put down by the company in a post, it emphasized that Accessibility API is not created and cannot be requested for remote call audio recording. And this new policy is starting to go into effect as on May 11.

One of the apps the ACR phone, which uses the Accessibility API to provide call recording for calls on Android phones took to the Reddit platform explaining how the new policy would affect all third-party call recording apps. 

After the release of the Android 10, call recording apps were blocked by Google from accessing the device microphone to record audio during calls done in order to safeguard users privacy and to follow call recording regulations across the world.

Some developers still uses the Accessibility API to continue offering call recording functionality running on Android 10 or later.

All applications that demand the use of the Accessibility API to record calls should quit doing so as of by May 11, as per Google's new updated policy. This implies that android users who are currently running on Android 10 or with more variants version of Google's operating system can never again record apps using third-party apps.

However, users on specific devices and in specific regions may be able to record calls using the built-in dialler app. 

Nonetheless, users with specific devices or in specific region might still have the option to record calls using the built-in dialler app on their devices.

As indicated on a comment from the ACR Phone developer, this is because system apps or Google apps which is an inbuilt app with the phone can access the system VOICE_CALL audio source on Android phones but this is not available for third parties apps according to the developer.

Google is yet to specify if existing call recording apps available on the store which continue to request the Accessibility API will be removed from the Play Store when the new policy goes into effect.

As May 11 is drawing closer users can still be able to continue using third-party apps to record calls. Google is yet to specify if existing call recording apps can still be able to use the Accessibility API functionality to be removed on Play store when new policy starts to go into effect.
